Phil Harris, the fishing boat captain whose adventures off the Alaska coast were captured on the television show “Deadliest Catch”, has died, the Discovery Channel said Tuesday night. He was 53.
Harris suffered what his family described as a massive stroke on Jan. 29 while the fishing vessel he captained, Cornelia Marie, was in port at St. Paul Island, Alaska. The fisherman was flown to Anchorage for surgery.
The reality show, which has filmed five seasons, has been one of the Discovery Channel’s most popular and depicts the crab fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska.
“It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad – Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end,” sons Josh and Jake Harris said in a statement released by the network. “For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down.”
In a statement, Discovery Channel senior vice president Elizabeth Hillman says, “Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him.”
“We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart,” she said.
In an e-mail to The Associated Press, she said no additional information was immediately available Tuesday night.
Harris had seemed to be improving, and in a posting last Saturday on the ship’s Web site, he was described as “talking to friends and family today; showing his greatest progress” since the stroke.
His sons wrote in a Feb. 3 posting that “No one ever said Captain Phil Harris wasn’t tough. Today, dad showed some good signs of improvement, squeezing our hands and even summoning his trademark Captain’s bluntness … We are encouraged but still very cautious.”
According to the ship’s Web site, Harris started working on fishing boats at age 7 and started work 10 years later on a crab boat. When Harris turned 21, he ran a fishing vessel out of Seattle, making him one of the youngest to captain a vessel in the Bering Sea.
When Harris suffered the stroke, the family said a friend, Derek Ray, had flown to St. Paul to take over the role of relief skipper for the rest of the opilio crab season.
Here’s a mix i stumbled upon from Squincy Jones. Its pretty awesome With my love for all things Dub and the throwback feel of Nintendo’s 8-bit… The sound is way more future than nostalgic. Do not sleep!!!!
No genre has been more synonomous with nerds and nudity than the horror, which is why Nerdcore got a little bit bloody for 2010. From the classics to the controversial, this 4th Annual calendar features pinups of all varieties: cover model Jana Jordan getting paranormal with a TV set, sultry scream queen Justine Joli in the most vintage of psychotic shower scenes, Bobbi Starr sewn together (literally) in a more naked version of Frankenstein, as well as Aria Giovanni, Kayla Jane Danger, Karlie Montana, Mosh, and Zoli Suicide getting their scream on.
I first off want to apologize for my tardiness in addressing this issue. The reason for the lack of sleepy cast and my post on the site are seeded in a personal pursuit to get my ducks in a row for a long time I let my personal life go by the way side and did nothing about be it to sheer laziness on my part or the fear of failure.
So in turn to that I took time off with everything. Sleepy Cast to my other endeavors to get myself into a space that I could be as happy about as I was the Sleepy Cast. Sometimes Sleepy Cast was the only thing I had to look forward to and one day a week does little to raise the spirits when you have to sit threw 6 other days that have little to no impact on anything in the world with Sleepy Cast I had the chance to bring joy and smile to so many faces.
It has and will continue to be a joy. So the whole point to this is I am in a transitional position in my life as is my co-host Ronin. We are not ending sleepy cast Ronin started his other podcast cause he loves Action movies. Its a great show and Andrew aka Korrosive was one of our guest and is a cool dude. I myself am now in the procese of doing a more musically focused show something I have wanted to do from day one. I have Dj-ed many times and miss it terribly and I’m in deep thought at this time looking into becoming a Local disc jockey on a local radio station here in memphis.
FZR and Ronin will be the launching point for mine and Ronin’s future endeavors as well as the Sleepy Cast. It will return very soon. I promise and it will be funnier and dirtier then ever. Until then look out for mine and Ronin’s Side projects and keep a look out on this site I will keep posting new content daily to make up for the slack in Ronin’s absence of an internet connection.
So until next time sleepy faithful remember to keep it sleepy and to take care of your self’s and each other.
Finally, the trailer to “Zombieland”. Some of you may have heard about this but Woody Harrelson told the media that he attacked a TMZ reporter because he was still in character, and thought the guy was a zombie. Nice try, Woody!
Alright, I’m sure you guys are wondering where the new episode of Sleepy Cast is. Well, Memphis got rocked by a nasty storm Friday. A nice chunk of the city had the power knocked out (though it’s not has bad as Hurricane Elvis was back in 03). I feel pretty lucky that I got power back Saturday. FZR on the other hand; has I write this has not gotten power back, and is hiding out in an undisclosed hotel where Miley Cyrus’s lawyers can’t find him. That slick pimp. We’re hoping to record Ep. 81 Sunday, so look forward to it then. But while you wait for that, I figure I’ll help wet your appetite by filling you in on some of projects we’re working on:
Site redesign. The layout is pretty good has it is, but FZR and I think we can too better.
Some videos. Us sleepy folk have been wanting to do more videos. Thing is we have tons of ideas and it’s hard to sort them all out. But more of those are coming. And I’m also working on my own ranting vlog.
Ghostbusters the Game. By the time you read this, it’ll be out in stores. And you can bet your ass hair that FZR and Ronin are gonna be all over it like an Allie Sin video. So, like it or not here that comes.
Ep. 100 and our 2 year anniversary. Ohhh yeah. Sadly, Ep. 100 and the 2yr anniversary won’t be on the same day, but lets face it; it was seer luck that we got that lucky by having the 1 year mark and Ep. 50 on the same day. We’ve got something special planned for Episode.100, but we’re pretty clueless about the 2 yr anniversary Ep. So Sleepy Faithful, be sure to send in your comments and messages here on the site, or at Sleepycast1@yahoo.com.
